Mitchell has served the bowling community for over fifty years. He served as President of the Syracuse Bowling Association in the 1993-94 season. Also in 1988, he served as President of the Syracuse Bowling Council and he served as chairman of the Young American Bowling Alliance for nine years. In 1992, while he was President of the Y.A.B.A., he helped to start the very popular in-school bowling program which remains very popular to this day.
